Abstract: Digital image and video compression is expected to grow into a $100 billion market by the year 2000. Without this enabling technology, image transmission on the information superhighway may be too expensive. A favorite is the “lossy” MPEG-2 standard in which image distortions increase with the compression until the image quality becomes unacceptable. An alternative is “lossless” autosophy image compression based on a new compression theory. In this session, we discuss the various forms of compression.
