Text compression with encryption
Develop algorithms for compressing text data with experimental results
Research opportunity
Abstract: The purpose of this research would be to implement Autosophy text compression and encryption in software to gather experimental data for compression performance and comparison with other data compression systems. This research should include the following steps:
Algorithm development: Develop software algorithms for: library growing, text encoding, and text retrieval. Gather a large collection of English documents of various sizes, and documents of other European languages for comparison (by Internet downloading).
Library generation: Grow a hyperspace library from the English text files. Generate a diagram showing the number of text input characters vs. the number of nodes stored in the hyperspace library. Try to improve the library efficiency if possible. Determine the optimal and the practical library size (8k nodes?) for commercial applications. Generate a fixed library copy for communication and testing.
Performance testing: Use text documents to determine the compression ratios for various text files. Do not use the files you used for generating the library. Use text from other European languages, using the English library, for comparison. Use other commercial data compressions utilities, including the Huffman codes, the Ziv-Lempel 77 codes, the LZW code, and the V.42bis code used on modems. Compare the compression ratios obtained from Autosophy and other commercial compression software. Try to improve compression performance if possible. Discuss advantages and disadvantages of each compression method.
Applications: Improved software algorithms developed in this project could be licensed to commercial companies for new compression and encryption software. Improved chipsets could be developed to replace the V.42bis chipsets in modems or high-speed networks.
